What is Asphalt Milling & Overlay?
Roads and parking lots experience wear and tear over time, developing bumps, cracks, and potholes that can damage vehicles and even pose hazards to pedestrians. For less serious damage, paving professionals tend to use a milling and overlay process, which is also known as a mill and fill. Milling is the process of grinding down the existing surface of a road, usually about two inches maximum. This milled material is then taken away from the job site and can be recycled for the current or other existing paving projects. To create a smoother surface, new asphalt material is laid. After about 3 days, traffic can resume as usual. The full curing process of new asphalt material can take about 6 months or more. Though pliant, it is still safe to drive over in the meantime.

Milling & Overlay vs. Full-Depth Reclamation
There are a few different ways US Asphalt can provide road maintenance and reconstruction. Another option is full-depth reclamation (FDR), which requires a much deeper dig (around 20”) and more time to fully finish. Whereas a mill and fill is ideal for surface reconstruction, FDR is usually for more severe damage.
The goal of a mill and fill is to make the surface of a lot or road smoother, safer, and more durable. With proper upkeep, you can expect the results of a milling and overlay job to last about 10-15 years before another round of similar maintenance is due. FDR results tend to last about 20 years.
